The Challenge of finding the best rehab
Selecting the right rehab center for your loved one can be challenging. There are many factors to consider and questions to ask. In the end, the best choice for your loved one will depend on their situation and personal preferences. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your options, here are some tips to help you select the best rehab facility for your loved one’s treatment needs.
Review Their Medicare Coverage Options
Start by taking a look at your loved one’s financial situation and options for assistance. If your loved one is a senior, they may be able to get treatment coverage through Medicare. Roughly 20 percent of veterans suffer from addiction and may struggle with PTSD, and rehab treatment can be extremely beneficial for these individuals. Veterans should know about their Medicare coverage details so they can take advantage of the benefits available to them and receive the treatment they need. Help your loved one read through their health insurance policy to find out if their rehab treatment will be covered.
Decide on Specific Rehab Goals
Each rehab facility has its own specialties and areas of focus. To choose the right treatment center, help your loved one define their rehab goals. Start by determining the behaviors or substances that your loved one needs help recovering from and consider any underlying medical or mental health issues that will need to be treated at the same time. Remember, addiction and mental health disorders often occur together. You will also have to decide what success will look like at the end of the rehabilitation program. Rehab success can range from getting through detox to an entire year of sobriety. Different treatment centers will target different goals.
Choose a Treatment Type
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there are several different kinds of rehab treatments to choose from — most of these start with a detox period. After this, your loved one can enter into long-term or short-term residential treatment, outpatient treatment, group counseling, or individual counseling.
Both your budget and the severity of your loved one’s addiction will help you choose their best course. Long-term residential treatment is typically associated with the highest success rates, but it’s also the most expensive option. On the other hand, low-intensity outpatient programs can be affordable but may not provide the level of treatment your loved one needs. For some people, 12-step programs work really well, while others find them ineffective. Your loved one may have to try a few different treatment types before finding the right one.
Investigate Your Treatment Center Options
Avoid choosing a rehab center based solely on what you read online. Instead, try to do some research to uncover program outlines and treatment success rates at different centers. Find out what kind of therapies are provided — like biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, or faith-based therapy. Ask how the treatment plans are developed and how often therapy is provided. Also, check the qualifications of the staff and find out whether the facility employs registered nurses. You can use these questions from Verywell Health to guide your research.
Consider Special Amenities of the Treatment Facility
One of the things that differentiate rehab centers from one another are amenities. Your facility options will likely range from extremely basic to luxury. At the very least, you’ll want to ensure that the center provides private rooms and an outdoor area for patients to use. Some other common amenities include exercise opportunities in the form of classes or gym equipment and educational opportunities such as job training, parenting classes, and skills-based lessons. You may also want to look for centers with meditation spaces since research has found meditation to be effective in addiction recovery.
Choosing an addiction treatment center for a loved one can be a very stressful process. Make sure you’re prepared to do plenty of research and investigate your options to ensure your loved one has the greatest chance of enjoying recovery success. Most importantly, don’t give up! It’s not uncommon for people to try many different treatment programs or facilities before they find the one that works for them.
It should also be stated that, should one not have the budget for treatment, the Twelve Step programs are entirely free. Unless you have a Dollar to leave to cover the coffee. In that case, it’s a buck.

Yes, I did the 12-step way to get 23 years of sobriety. I was given a book, coffee and a piece of cake my first meeting. It was just the right kind of love to get me that first 24 hours.

I did everything – out-patient first, they called it “intensive”, but it wasn’t. Then in-patient after I got a DUI whilst in “intensive out-patient”, then meetings to keep it rolling. Congratulations on 23 years. Awesome, indeed. And looking at your gravatar photo, you sobered up young too – another impressive feat. Well played.
